Hijab ban protested in Vienna

A group of young Austrian activists gathered in Vienna to protest against a new regulation drafted by the Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz to ban public Muslim women from wearing headscarves.

Outside the University of Vienna, the protesters chanted slogans calling for equality and freedom of religion for all.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Youth of Austria spokesperson Canan Yasar slammed the policy based on “women's appearances" and rejected claims that women wearing headscarves at work would raise negative impressions.

Commenting on Kurz’s statement, Socialist Youth of Austria Fiona Herzog said, "It is definitely unacceptable and if the ban is applied, it will target all Muslims.”

Muslims account for 6% of the Austrian population.
