The Head of the UN Mission in Iraq, Jan Kubic, said Wednesday November 29, 2017, he was pleased with the position of the Supreme Religious Authority Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani supporting anti-corruption measures.

"We were pleased to hear the position of Ayatollah Sistani supporting anti-corruption measures," Kubic stated at a press conference in Najaf after meeting the religious leader.

"We support the government reform and the fight against corruption, we also want the implementation of the PMU law and arms embargo between the state," he added.

In regards to the elections, Kubic stressed, "The position of the United Nations refusing to postpone the date is clear. The Constitution and holding the elections on time must be respected."

"The United Nations will provide technical support for the elections to be on time and we will provide all appropriate conditions to support the Iraqis to participate in the elections," the UN official added.

Jan Kubis concluded saying, “We are following Sistani's speeches through the Friday sermon and fatwas issued that call for humanity, unity and moderation. We do not accept interference in Iraqi internal affairs and we are committed to the Iraqi constitution and Iraqi laws," reiterating his support for the Iraqi government to recover money from the corrupt officials and hold them accountable.
