The holy city of Samarra in Iraq is commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan Askari – the eleventh infallible imam amid tight security measures.
Monday, the 8th day in the lunar Hijri month of Rabi al-Awwal, corresponding to Nov 27, marks the sorrowful occasion.
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims are expected to visit the city and more than 200 service units have been erected to serve the pilgrims with free food and drinks.
According to military sources, forces from the Iraqi army and police as well as the PMU are working to ensure security for the pilgrims.
Samarra is home to al-Askariyain Shrine, containing the shrines of Imam Hadi and Imam Askari.
