The International Media Center of Imam Hussein Holy Shrine has commemorated the third anniversary of the religious fatwa of ‘Sufficient Jihad’ (holy war) against ISIS, which was issued by the Shia Muslim Supreme Religious Authority, his Eminence Sayyid Ali al-Sistani on 13 June 2014.

The fatwa was a call to take up arms against ISIS; whoever was able to fight had to go to the battlefield until the number of men is sufficient to stop ISIS’ attacks and expel them out of the country.

The essential religious edict was declared through Ayatollah Sistani’s representative, Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi al-Karbalaey, in a Friday Sermon. During the sermon, al-Karbalaey said that protecting the country was everyone’s responsibility, especially when ISIS was targeting everyone, regardless of one’s religion or religious denomination.

He added that protecting Iraq is a religious and national duty that everyone has to face in order to defend the country and the sacrosanct.
