UN Representative in Iraq: Directives of Ayatollah Sistani essential for continuing assistance

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jan Kubis, visited the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine and met with its Chief Cleric Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi al-Karbalaey to discuss the current development in Iraq and the future activities of the UN to provide continuous support to the Iraqi people.

Kubis said in a statement to the holy shrine’s website, “The guidance provided by the Grand Ayatollah Sistani through his speeches and through Sheikh al-Karbalaey is essential for us to continue providing assistance in Iraq.”

“This visit is not only to discuss the current development in the country but to discuss the future activities of the UN to provide continuous support to the Iraqi people,” added the UN Special Envoy.

 

The UN Representative also expressed his concern and full condemnation of the assassination attempt on Sheikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalaey during the Jan. 26 Friday sermon.
