The Secretary-General of Imam Hussein Holy Shrine Sayyid Jafar al-Mousawi welcomed Sheikh Mahdi al-Sumaidaie, Iraq’s Grand Sunni Mufti, on an official visit to the holy shrine on March 28, 2017.

Al-Sumaidaie called for unifying Iraq and the public opinion as well as standing against the extremist ideology that aims to divide the Islamic nation and distort the Islamic religion.

“We, as Iraq’s Dar al-Ifta, bear a large part in confronting the ideological attacks that are trying to distort Islam and desecrate the land of Iraq. We must unite and stand strong until we lift the knife from our necks, for either accepting to divide Iraq or be slain. Nevertheless, with unity of opinion and agreement we can make this knife go to those seeking to divide our nation,” stated the Grand Mufti.

The religious scholar also refuted the political groups that take the parliamentary positions to hold conferences and deals in the name of the Sunni community in agreement with those who want to divide Iraq and destroy its entity, calling from the land of Karbala to synergy and cohesion amongst all Iraqis.

The visit came a few weeks after the International Media Conference, an interfaith event attended by world renowned figures.
