In collaboration with the Iraqi Ministry of Transport and Holy Karbala local government, construction work of Imam Hussein International Airport is underway in Holy Karbala, deputy Secretary-General of the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine said.
"The Imam Hussein Holy Shrine has received proposals from a number of well-known foreign companies specialized in designing and constructing airports”, Sayed Afdhal al-Shami said, adding "the Holy Shrine held meetings with the Iraqi Ministry of Transport to discuss and choose the best proposal."
The supervising committee of the Investment Projects Department of the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine said the exterior fence of the airport has been erected, along with the headquarters for the technicians, engineers, and working staffs.
According to officials, the airport's transportation capacity will reach 15-20 million passengers a year.
